Facebook’s Conflict of Interest in Privacy

Credit Alan Cleaver

Two years ago Facebook employed a behavioral tracking system called “Beacon” that tracked users’ online behavior through participating merchandisers and then published that information on users’ news feeds. Customers caught wind of it and filed a class-action lawsuit when purchases they made showed up on Facebook without their permission.

It appears that in an attempt to remedy the situation, Facebook proposed it slap its own wrist and create a foundation to make people more aware of their privacy rights on the Internet. Advocacy groups such as Public Citizen reject the proposal because it fails to provide redress to users and gives Facebook influence in an arena it has already proven it was unwilling or too lax to defend.
