LinkedIn made many changes over the past year, most for the better such as the new profile design and new Jobs search. The next rollout of design changes started a short while ago, and we will all soon have the new top navigation to simplify our LinkedIn experience.
- The top bar will now consist of a much simpler layout, with a small LinkedIn logo and menu options only for Home, Profile, Network and Career.
- Network has two drop-down options: Connections and Groups, and Career splits into Jobs, Companies and Post a Job.
- There’s a new and improved Search with autosuggest, autocomplete and drop-down search results from the whole of LinkedIn.
- There are a few icons on the right for Inbox, Flag, Add Connections and Help & Settings.
And that’s it!
No Recommendations, Edit/View Profile, Following, News, Signal…?
While these parts of LinkedIn are all still available from links on other pages, most LinkedIn users will have to look for everything on LinkedIn for a while!
Here’s a simple representation of what you can expect:
Here you will be able to see News, LinkedIn Today, activity of your connections and companies you follow and share your own updates.
This takes you to your profile, and you can edit it by using the Edit button on your profile. You’ll also find Recommendations under the Edit drop-down.
The old Contacts and Groups tabs collapses into the Network tab. I quite like this change as it makes it clear that this is where networking takes place – with your Connections and in Groups.
What will be missed is the list of groups you joined under the old Groups menu.
Jobs and Companies are now under one tab called Careers. And as LinkedIn makes an income out of job postings, it’s understandable to see the Post a Job link also under the Career tab.
As with Groups, I will miss the shortcuts from the old Companies menu, where my company page was listed. At least with the new search it should be a breeze to start typing my company name and finding it!
The Search box moves to the center and promises to have much improved search results. Advanced search can still be found on the Home and Profile tabs.
Inbox icon (envelope)
You’ll find your usual inbox here, split into Messages and Invitations.
Notifications icon (flag)
Same as before, you’ll get a drop-down with all your notifications.
Add Connections icon (plus and silhouette)
This icon will take you to the old Connections page.
Account & Settings icon (your avatar)
Here you can sign out of your account, upgrade your account, change the language of your account, edit your privacy and settings, go to the Help Centre (why here?) and post a job.
I’ve only had a short time to play with a client’s profile where the new changes are active, but I already find the old way on my own profile cumbersome! I’ve noticed LinkedIn’s attempts at making it easier and more intuitive to use, and I must commend them on the changes. I’m looking forward to using the new navigation!
